Drawings

Many of my drawings were made on the occasion of stays in Banjul Gambia, the Congolese Matonge district in Brussels, Johannesburg / Soweto in South Africa and Botopasi in Suriname. In Suriname I stayed in the jungle for 8 weeks. Here I have recorded the purity and authenticity of the Saramacans in my portrait drawings.

With my portraits I want to capture and personalize a cultural diversity. Getting people out of a kind of anonymity and giving a face. These ideas have their origin in the refugee problem, the colonialist and slave past.
